IDEATION project: advancing circular design in sports organizations

On October 31st, 2024, the Erasmus+ Sport project IDEATION partners convened to present the developed theoretical framework for Circular Design (CD) strategies tailored specifically to local and regional sports organizations. This comprehensive framework is designed to support these organizations in embedding Circular Economy (CE) principles into their operations, catering to diverse entities ranging from small community clubs to large regional organizations.

Key Objectives of the Framework:

  • Enhancing CE Education: providing knowledge and tools to promote sustainability within sports organizations.
  • Sharing Best Practices: facilitating the exchange of innovative and successful sustainability practices across the sports sector.
  • Promoting Sustainable Practices: aligning with legal and financial frameworks to ensure compliance and effective implementation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: encouraging active participation from all involved parties.
  • Fostering Psychological Well-being: highlighting the social benefits of sustainable practices.
  • Measurable Metrics: establishing KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for monitoring and continual improvement.

Hands-On Toolkit for Implementation

The meeting also introduced a practical “hands-on” Circular Design (CD) strategy implementation toolkit, specifically developed for sports organizations.

This actionable guide focuses on four key phases:

  • Discovering: auditing current sustainability practices, engaging stakeholders, and identifying barriers such as regulatory or financial challenges.
  • Defining: setting clear CD goals and KPIs, such as waste reduction and energy efficiency, aligned with EU and national regulations.
  • Developing: creating scalable solutions, including eco-friendly materials, community recycling initiatives, and energy-efficient facilities. – Delivering: establishing sustainability committees, conducting CD training sessions, and leveraging feedback for ongoing improvement.

Inspiration Through Real-World Examples

To further enrich the discussion, partners shared real-world case studies, including Circular Economy initiatives in nautical clubs. These examples showcased how sustainable practices can simultaneously benefit the environment and society.

This milestone meeting reflects the IDEATION project’s unwavering commitment to advancing innovation and sustainability within the sports sector. As the framework and toolkit are refined, partners remain dedicated to creating actionable solutions that empower sports organizations to embrace Circular Design principles.
